He's 42 with his health, a job, a dog, and a net worth of 16k, and no woman in his life. He's doing WAY better than he thinks!
Right, that's absolutely true. It's just that when someone is going through something like this (bankruptcy, divorce, etc.), they walk around all day feeling like they just got their teeth kicked in. It's really hard to take a step back and see things clearly when you're going through that.
Not really.. he's got no health insurance, no place to stay.. so. No he's not better.. he most probably will be in the near future.. but not today
@@NaNa-lt1po He's got no health insurance?
@@NaNa-lt1po if he can get a VA loan he's almost certainly also available for VA medical benefits. That basically means his only medical bills are the gas to drive to a VA clinic.
@@NaNa-lt1po he's doing better than most Americans right now. It's sad but true.
Apart from being homeless. He's not doing that bad. He makes $60k a year and has no debt.
I wonder if he can find an apartment after bankruptcy.
And he has hardly any expenses. Making 60k year, if he push it like 3 more years, he could buy small apartment by cash
@@soju69jinro it's possible. he might have to pay more than the typical security deposit, but it's possible.

I've been practically living in my rig for about 10yrs with my dog (now 14yrs old)... This career got me out of a big hole. I own my own home, yet I'm only there 4-7 days a month. Financially, I'm doing great. I love the road and love working towards retirement. I get paid to travel this beautiful country. It's not a lifestyle for everyone though. I hope this guy finds his way.
Been living in my car too for several months. Feels good meeting people who feels the same way about wanting to get out of debt

I was homeless once... it was a good humbling experience, started as a laborer without any skill, made my way up the ladder, became a manager, then a vp at another company. This month I made 56k on my side hustle, which of course is better than my "real" job. But I'm thankful for both! Anyone can do it.
I wasn’t really homeless but it was a tough situation in my house, I get the keys to my apartment tomorrow. God is good.

I would continue to live in the truck for another year. I'd get a hotel room one weekend a month. No responsibility you get to stay in a nice place while you reset emotionally. I've been driving 21 years, it will be hard for him to get out of it. He works with his dog.
Why is it hard to get out of? Couldn't he drive local routes or city bus?
@@tomcripps7229 it's a lifestyle as well as a job. I dont look at or work with the same people everyday. I enjoy the solitude of the job and I also have my dog with me. He's not really homeless like so many people keep saying here. It's not that uncommon for drivers to live in their trucks. Some of the big company trucks are pretty nice.
Best wishes for a successful transition "gear-man"! My Dad was a truck driver & gone a lot. Wanting something different is definitely understood. Listen to Dave & friends, they will help you get to where you need to be! Finding a church home is a great start!
The title sounds crazy. But, this guy can turn things around quick if he focuses.

This guy is in a better position than a lot of people who are living way above their means and in heaps of debt and drowning in all of the other problems that life throws at you. He has something that most people could ever dream of which is a fresh start and a simple lifestyle that will serve as a solid foundation. And he doesn't seem like the type who calls in and you can tell they aren't going to take Dave's advice because they are stuck in their ways. He's got this.

With all due respect, he has no idea what it’s like to push 600 miles a day. He also has no idea what it’s like to be behind the wheel for 14 hours a day. We have a lot of problems but sleeping is not one of them.
So true!!! And some of us are just stuck. I actually seem to think nobody understands what an OTR driver needs. But one thing for sure we are needed!!!
Late thirties live in my van no dog no debt make $45k/yr have $270k net worth and growing in brokerage accounts taxable/401k/roth. Retiring at 62 or sooner leaving the West going to central america/asia. Not as bad as working till 80 eating catfood.
Clean slates are a really good thing
If he's making $60k and living in the semi, he should be able to save up and get a good place.
If he does it correctly he can save enough money to buy a 2 family rental property. Wish he would do this!
If I were him I’d drive for two more years, then buy a duplex and live in one unit
what Dave and John speak of is shelter from the storm. After a few weeks of that the decisions become more solid and the vision becomes more clear. They are 200% right on this. Do it!
Dudes killing it for being homeless. Honestly just seems like a free spirit type. VA has good rates home prices are raising substantially id do like Dave says save some money and buy in with equity
Please, get this guy off the road into an apartment so he can start aging at a normal pace.
Not an apartment. A house. With a yard to play Frisbee with his dog. That dog doesn't deserve to go to the pound cuz landlord.
Renting is stoooopid! It's throwing money away. Id stay in the truck as long as it takes to get a house.

I would not sell the truck though because he will need a reliable car to go to work. He will bounce back within about 5-7 years. He seems open and willing to change his life so it sounds good. I think he needs a little apartment and such to be happy. I hope he finds something seems like a nice guy. I would not get a 5k truck only because it may break down a lot.
Any $5K truck wouldn't be drivable. We're talking truck here, not a car or SUV.
20 years in trucking and he only makes 60k? He's doing something wrong. He can move to ltl home weekly and make 100k and stay in a hotel on the road paid by the company. Or 80k hauling fuel local home daily
Facts
Yeah there are tons of options in local trucking. I’ve talked to fuel guys that make 100k a year and home every day.
Yeah I thought the same. 60k is low for trucking but maybe his license are dinged to where he can’t work for just anybody? Hope that’s not the case but could be.
Don't rent your own apartment. Do what I did and rent a room+bathroom in a shared house with kitchen privileges.
He is being underpaid.
I went bankrupt in 2008. Lost millions. Lost all retirement and savings. Then 2009 divorced and homeless. Owed millions in back taxes and alimony. Homeless with no hope. Left the USA and lived in a old used car for 5 months. Washed window on the street to be able to eat. Beat up. Robbed twice. Homeless people are rough. The streets are rough when you come from a suburban life. Anything is possible. Now I live ok. Start by working hard, then start working smart. Start from zero
That absolutely sucks man, glad to hear you are doing better. What was your occupation before the 08’ crisis?

Where is he going to find a job paying 60k with no job experience except trucking? He is better off saving 50k in one year. Then go back to school for a decent paying job off the road. Or save up 50k then put a down payment on a house. Then get a trucking job where you are home on weekends.
He’s in a great position to save like crazy. No rent…I know living in a truck but just endure it for 1 year
At least he is one level above living in a van down by the river.
I filed chapter #13 bankruptcy in 2010 paid it back 100% in 2015 and now I’m building my Florida retirement home....filing bankruptcy is not necessarily a bad thing!
Keep the truck. You can start a business like lawn care or handyman construction etc... Do not get rid of it!!
I agree. He would sell the current truck at trade in value.. buy next truck at retail. It costs money every time you trade vehicles
Best sleep I ever got was in the back of a freightliner. Pulled the brakes crawled in back I’d pass out in 60 seconds.
Kudos to him. My dad drove truck for 40 yrs but was always home for weekend when possible. I lived in bachelor apt for a while. Cheaper and some layouts can seem bigger. Be creative w/bookcases and furniture to create bedroom. Less to clean and less furniture to fill. Just an idea. Best of luck to Nick. PS get a place with a decent tub for hot baths and or good heating pad for a while. Your back has prob paid a price more then you think. 🙏👏
Local truck driving jobs pay more than 60k he can stay in trucking.
He's tired of his job though. Not about the money anymore
Exactly, I have a CDL license and drove for a company Over the road for about 5-6 months and figured out it wasn’t for me. This job is mentally exhausting and nobody seems to give Truckers the respect they deserve. It’s also very dangerous.
Now that all of the money coming in is his, he may find driving more palatable, too.
For more guidance.
Respect our truck drivers.
Am I the only one that can discern there is more to the story here. Keep the pickup that is paid for, keep driving the big rig until you save up to buy a house, get a trucking job where you are home more, they are out there trust me, and paying more than what he is making, yes in the south, that is where I live.
That's a good advice Sandra.
As a truck driver myself, rent makes no sense because you're never home. I think he should buy a house right away.
I have to agree with you. He should stay where he's at until he has a proper emergency fund and a down payment on a house. Then he can find another driving job, or something different, where he can be home at night.
@@Longmove247 as an owner operator trucker u can gross 220k
I filed Chapter 7 2 years ago. Best decision I ever made.
CDL driving is a pretty good income. I wouldn’t give it up completely. I would advise him to max out his 401(k), because he’s probably the type that is better off not having money in his hands. Come to think of it, he probably would be better off paying cash for a place, no mortgage. Some people just can’t handle a lot of bills.
he said he has no money..
60k living and driving a semi sounds like a very low salary compared to most long haulers. I think brand new drivers here pretty much everywhere in pa off 81 make 75k minimum
He will probably never make 60k again but sleeping in a one bedroom apartment will be better than the truck.
I wouldn't sell the F150, it's paid off, it's a vehicle you've been driving for a while and you know what's and what's not wrong with it. Sell it for 15K, then get a used truck for 5K, put 10K in your pocket. What happens if transmission or engine goes bad on that second truck? That money is going to start coming out of your pocket really fast. I wouldn't do it, just sayin'.
